Dr Adam Janjua - a GP from Fleetwood Practice. He has given us permission to use it as there is a relevance to us all in the perception that the public and media seem to have regarding General Practice and the attitude and abuse our receptionists are having to cope with. Please watch and think twice before being abusive to staff who have worked extremely hard throughout the pandemic to keep GP services running for all our patients. Please also read the section relating to GP Practices being open and how to best access our services. We know the majority of our patients are kind and rational people who understand the pressure but there are more than a few who think it is acceptable to treat the team with abuse – mainly because they cannot get exactly what they want. These people will be treated with zero tolerance and removed from our registered list.

From October 2019 the ordering of repeat prescriptions will no longer be possible from local pharmacies. Instead, patients will be required to order directly from the practice or use online services such as myGP or Patient Access.
NHS Blackpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which plans and buys local health services, has introduced the changes to improve patient safety and reduce unnecessary costs from waste. The change will also bring Blackpool into line with the rest of Lancashire and much of the country.
We have seen that when patients order their own prescriptions this is safer and reduces waste. Over-ordering, stockpiling and unused medicines present a real risk to patient safety. It also costs the NHS hundreds of millions of pounds every year.
The only thing that is changing is that patients will not be able to order a repeat prescription at their local pharmacy and pharmacists will not be able to order prescriptions on patients’ behalf. Patients will still be able to collect or receive their medication from wherever they do now.
Practices will work with any particularly vulnerable patients and their families to ensure they are not negatively affected by the changes. Any patients the practices or pharmacies feel would struggle to cope with the change will be exempt and will be allowed to continue having prescriptions ordered on their behalf.
If you need help signing up to myGP or Patient Access, please speak to a receptionist on your next visit to the practice.
Anyone affected by this change who has concerns can email blackpool.medicinesoptimisation@nhs.netor call 01253 955480.
